Hawaii's volcanic geology gives most of the islands soft to moderately soft water, so mineral scale on a front-loader's heating element is rarely the presenting complaint. Humidity and salt air do the damage instead. Trade-wind humidity keeps a door boot damp essentially year-round, and gasket mold develops faster here than almost anywhere on the mainland.
