Colorado's water is hard through most of the populated Front Range and the western slope, fed by aquifers and mountain sources that carry a real mineral load. In a front-load washer that shows up as scale on the heating element and a gradually restricting inlet valve, plus a mineral film in the door boot that holds detergent against the rubber. The dry, high-elevation air cuts the other way and keeps gasket mold slower than in humid states. What Colorado does add is a sharp day-to-night temperature swing and cold winters, which are hard on rubber supply hoses and a real freeze risk for laundry in an unheated garage.
