California is really several water regions in one state. Southern California and much of the Central Valley draw on Colorado River and State Water Project supplies that run genuinely hard, while the far north and parts of the coast are considerably softer. In the hard-water areas, front-loaders show it as scale on the heating element, slow fills from a clogging inlet valve, and stiff mineral residue in the door boot.
