Almost always the door boot seal. That rubber fold holds water after every cycle, and detergent and fabric-softener residue build up behind it until mold takes hold. Cleaning the boot, the dispenser drawer and the drain pump filter clears most cases. Leaving the door ajar between loads and switching to HE detergent in the right dose prevents it coming back.
