Overall, washing machine repair runs $100 to $400 on average nationally, with a typical figure around $180 to $250. Labor generally runs $50 to $150 per hour, though most technicians in our network quote a flat price for the job rather than billing hourly. Sources: Angi, HomeGuide.
On many top-loaders the working parts are reachable from above. On a front-loader the drum, bearing, boot and pump sit behind a front panel, a counterweight and often the control assembly. Changing a bearing means separating the outer tub. That is labor, and it is the main reason the same nominal job costs more on a front-loading machine.
A reasonable rule: if the repair costs less than half the price of a comparable new machine and the washer is under about eight years old, repair. Most front-load repairs fall well under that line against the $800 to $1,500 a comparable replacement runs. The honest exceptions are a corroded spider arm, or a bearing that has been left long enough to damage the drum — on an older machine either can approach the cost of replacing the unit, and a technician worth calling will tell you so rather than take the job.
Brand and model (parts pricing and teardown difficulty vary widely), whether OEM or aftermarket parts are used, local labor rates, and whether more than one fault is present. A leaking tub seal and a failed bearing are usually done together because the teardown is shared — which makes the combined job better value than two separate visits.
