New York City and the lower Hudson valley drink very soft water piped from the Catskill and Delaware watersheds, while much of upstate — the Finger Lakes, the Mohawk valley, western New York — sits on limestone and runs considerably harder. Downstate, then, scale is rarely the complaint and humidity-driven gasket mold dominates; upstate, front-loaders see scale on the heating element and a mineral film in the boot as well. Both halves share cold winters, which put supply hoses and the water-holding drain pump trap at risk in unheated basements.
