Montana's water is hard through most of its populated valleys, drawn from aquifers with a real mineral load, so scale on a front-loader's heating element and a slowly restricting inlet valve are common findings. The dry climate is genuinely helpful on the mold side — gasket problems develop much more slowly here than in the humid South. Winter is the offsetting factor, and it is severe. A front-load washer holds standing water in its drain pump trap by design, and in an unheated garage, shop or basement that trap and the supply hoses behind it face weeks of real freeze risk.
