Michigan's glacial geology gives the state hard water almost everywhere, and in the rural counties on private wells it can be harder still, often with iron on top of the calcium. A front-load washer shows it as scale on the heating element, inlet valve screens that clog and slow the fill, and rust-tinged staining on laundry where iron is present.
