Indiana has the hardest water in the United States by most measures, a legacy of Paleozoic limestone crushed and spread across the state by glaciers. For a front-load washer that is a constant, low-grade burden: scale accumulates on the heating element, the inlet valve screens gradually clog and lengthen fill times, and a hard mineral film builds in the door boot that holds detergent residue against the rubber and shortens the gasket's life.
