Idaho's water is hard through most of the Snake River Plain and the southern population centres, carrying enough mineral load to leave steady scale on a front-loader's heating element and to gradually restrict the inlet valve screens. The dry climate means gasket mold develops far more slowly than it does in the Southeast, which is a genuine advantage. Cold is the counterweight. Winters here are long enough that supply hoses and the drain pump trap are at real risk in an unheated garage or shop, and the trap on a front-load machine holds standing water by design.
