Alaska's water is generally soft, which spares front-loaders the scale problems common in the Lower 48's limestone country. Cold is the dominant factor instead. A front-load washer keeps standing water in its drain pump trap by design, and that trap — along with the supply hoses behind the machine — is genuinely vulnerable in an unheated garage, arctic entry or crawlspace during a deep cold snap. Homes here also run tightly sealed for most of the year, so the humidity a washer puts into the air stays in the house, and a door boot left closed between loads can still develop odors even in a dry climate.
